2012 Spring Anime Preview

You know how our season previews go. There’s a basic formula to all of them. First, a summary, then a picture, then a disclaimer talking about how I stole all this information from other blogs, and then the actual post, written by me, Mushyrulez, all by myself.

WELL GUESS WHAT?! WE’RE SWITCHING THINGS UP A BIT THIS YEAR. How?

Firstly, there WON’T BE A PICTURE after a summary which is this summary which is this sentence and the sentences immediately before and after this.

Secondly, there WON’T BE A DISCLAIMER after a picture because, wow, we’ve actually done our own research (read: searching for trailers on YouTube) this time!! This also means no handy embedded chart here; just search for it yourself. And seriously, if you’re going to read the chart anyways, there’s hardly any point reading this post. At least after you read this post, you’ll still have an excuse to read the chart. This paragraph is not a disclaimer telling you that this post actually doesn’t talk about anime at all.

Thirdly, there WON’T BE BLUE TRAILER LINKS because I can’t modify the link style on this new theme I’m using!! I know, simply horrible, right? The Carnelian (dark-reddish-brown, for those less artistically inclined) texts are links. It gets pretty confusing when I put it after orange text, which is written by me.

Finally, there WON’T JUST BE ME writing this post (otherwise, why would I colour my text?), because it’s time for O-New to DIVERSIFY like Random Curiosity and METANORN have done, although of course, we’re much more HIGH TENSION SYNDROME. AbsoluteZero255 has so kindly accepted my offer to let him write 99% of this post (using this colour of blue text), unlike that other guy flare who is being such a flare not writing posts and flaring his flare and OK, LET US MOVE ON TO THE PREVIEW. Accel World

Accel World is about AbsoluteZero255 and how he is a) fat b) short c) unathletic d) computer-game-savvy e) stupid f) the main character of his FACE. — Mushyrulez

Although the concept of Accel World is quite novel (that is to say, its concepts stem from a light NOVEL), I would appreciate it if the main character were more cool and less ugly. Furthermore, the name ‘AbsoluteZero255’ does not exactly engender compassion towards the protagonist; a much better name would be, for example, Tsukasa. Ultimately, I was going to write a manga review about Accel World but I never got to it so I don’t actually know what it’s about. Yes I am too lazy to watch this trailer which I am linking below SHUT UP

Acchi Kocchi

Wouldn’t you just love to poke in a relationship between two young high schoolers who have a subtle distance between each other? Of course you would. Tsumugi and Io have this subtle distance that anyone would want to jump in between just to bug them. That’s what the other characters are there for. Tsumugi, being a tsundere and all, won’t be honest about her feelings toward Io. Io on the other hand is unaware of Tsumugi’s feelings, hence the subtle distance between the two. Now, let’s watch these two and see what events await them… — MangaHelpers

The weird thing about previewing is that one always tries to be right. However, I couldn’t really find much at all of what I feel about this show from the limited resources (the little blurb from MAL and the trailer). I could say that it looks clichéd and horrible, but I could also say that it could be nicely heartwarming and simple. But anyway, I tend to lean toward the former, except not really that horrible, maybe just not excellent. Anyway, it’s enough to make me not follow it.

I trust that sa547 is indeed an expert in the field of speculating about voice cast members and supporting characters, as his wise words have reverberated through the halls of such prestigious forums as Ni Ho NGO Go, a forum which touts the superiority of the Szechuan greeting of ‘Ni Ho’ (as opposed to the traditional Peking ‘你好’, ní hǎo) for non-government officers serving near the area. Such a distinguised forum must have in each post several buckets of undistilled wisdom, and as such, let it lie that I am not watching Symphogear and have as much intention to watch AKB0048 as I have ammunition in my AK-47, so let this summary further serve as a warning to the un-content which lies ahead. The animation looks like it was made by Disney, not Korean people. Except apparently it’s made by Singapore, and Singapore’s like, the richest per capita country in the world. I think I’ll watch it because I hate Korean people and their stupid Korean animation and Disney’s kinda cool and so is Singapore. Also, the description seems to have sex involved. Everyone loves sex.

Eureka Seven AO

The story is set on Okinawa’s isolated island of Iwado, which has seen a growing movement advocating a return to an autonomous government. I’m sorry for having commenting of the preview of the sequel without watching the first series. I wasn’t ever really one for mecha shows, so please pardon me further (as you may know, the reason why anime got into mecha shows in the early 1980’s and such was mainly for ease of animation and whatever). What I’d like to say about this is that I think that the animation is quite smooth and nice. I may be saying this because I just finished watching P4, which had extremely horrible animation (you could see that Adachi looks like a different character every time he’s drawn). But my point remains, this is remarkable in its own right. I also really love the setting, an isolated island full of nature. All of the characters seem pretty cool as well. A boy with missing parents is quite interesting. I’m pretty sure that the epic mecha battles will have great execution as well from what I’ve seen. Pretty solid!

Ginga e Kickoff!

It’s a sport anime. I’m not sure how sport anime normally play out, but I guess that it might be executed well. It could be hella heartwarming, or it could just be ONE GAME AFTER ANOTHER with vague development in characters and plot. I’m leaning toward the former actually.

Seriously, I don’t know why you guys are still reading this post. I don’t know why I’m still writing this post IN CLASS with a laptop that I borrowed from my English teacher. You know, my socials class is coming up in thirteen minutes and I still haven’t finished my research for it. You know, I was late for Physical Education class this morning and didn’t realize that the class went off for Guidance with the Grade Counsellor. I guess this shows to you my attitude towards sports: don’t do them. I guess this doesn’t show to you my attitude towards sports anime: talk about watching them every single season preview, but never actually watch that. In my defence, not only did I watch no sports anime for the past two seasons, I also watched no non-blogging anime for the past two seasons!!

Jormungand

The series follows Koko Hekmatyar, a young arms dealer who sells weapons under HCLI, a weapons corporation.
As one of the company’s unofficial weapon sellers, she secretly sells weapons in many countries while avoiding the local authorities and law enforcements as most of her work is actually illegal under international law. Traveling with her is her team of bodyguards who are mostly composed of ex-military veterans.
Her latest addition to her crew is Jonah, a seemingly emotionless child soldier who is skilled in combat yet ironically hates arms dealers. Jonah joins Koko as he wishes to find the arms dealer responsible for his family’s death. What follows is Koko and her crews escapades around the world. — Wikipedia

The sixteen-second preview that I watched began with something that immediately reminded me of a car chase scene in the Roberta arc from the first season of Black Lagoon. Actually, the entire preview reminded me of Black Lagoon with, simultaneously, hints of more comedic antics and hints of a less episodic and more linear plot line. This means that I interpreted it wrong at least once.
From the preview and the excerpt from Wikipedia it looks as if this will be an episodic series with an overarching plot that resolves itself in the end, namely that of the story of Jonah. Some could say the same of Black Lagoon, as it may be the story of how Rock adapts to the world of crime and villainy that he is suddenly plunged into. However, Black Lagoon‘s overarching theme was a bit more subtle than the one that I think this is going to be.
The strongest point of Black Lagoon for me at least was the setting (pardon me for the endless comparisons). Roanapur was probably one of the most gratuitous settings that I’ve seen in a story. A city full of action and senseless killing. As this is about Koko’s escapades around the world, this show will have more variety, and I’m hoping that it will have the theme of how there is always crime, no matter how clean and proper you think your sector of the world is.
All in all, it looks very promising.

Y’know, pretty funny stuff here, High School of the Dead OF THE DEAD is actually the anime adaptation of Dead Rising OF THE DEAD, which was in turn based on a manga called Deadman Wonderland OF THE DEAD starring a girl called Dead Master OF THE DEAD. Yeah, I guess that wasn’t actually pretty funny stuff, but you know me, I say things.

Wow, you season previewers really are pretty darn lame. Even Reiseng left Kuro Majo-san ga Tooru!! out of his season preview, and I thought he caught every show this season? In fact, the only person who’s actually written about Kuro Majo-san ga Tooru!! is Bakamochi of Random Curiosity. I don’t even know who Bakamochi is! And he only included it in the post for completion’s sake! Does nobody understand just how awesome this show is?! Come on, just look at that premise! You have a person called Chiyoko! She has a friend called Gyubid! Do you know any other anime characters named Gyubid?! NO, YOU DON’T. Kuro Majo-san ga Tooru is the most unique and awesome show this season and YOUR OPINION TO THE CONTRARY DOESN’T MATTER

From what I saw, this is going to be, well…sexy and enthralling. Particularly sexy. Yeah. I never saw a Lupin III anime before, so this may be pretty exciting. Looks fun, especially since I love thief/heist things.

Apparently, awesomebananandancer, a retired author at this blog, liked the manga. He linked me to a page in the manga (several dozen chapters in), and the titular titularly-endowed heroine was killing a supernatural demon with the power of supernatural powers, or something. I may be mistaken about the details, for I was so traumatized by the experience that I vowed never to touch upon the subject of Medaka Box ever again. I’m not sure why I would be traumatized, but I was. Now, let’s see who’s working on the anime adaptation – GAINAX is animating, good, they’re a good studio, uh, the original creation is by NisiOisiN…

Metal Fight Beyblade Zero G

I like the part about Metal Fight Beyblade Zero G being not having a metal motif. I’ll bet that the ‘Metal’ in front of ‘Fight Beyblade Zero G’ just stands for ‘Man, Entertainment These days Are Lame’. Or something. I also like the part about Zero G. I always thought playing Beyblade in outer space was a good idea, except the Beyblades would probably not stop. And probably never hit each other, either. Yeah, I think that’ll be ~exciting~, the person whose Beyblade crashes into a planet first loses. Take five hours chronicling the slow drift of the Beyblade from one side of the galaxy to the other.

Nadia, the Secret of Blue Water

Remake of Nadia, the Secret of Blue Water [1990] — Your Mom

Unable to find a trailer, I looked at an OP of the original series. I should say that it looks really good. Setting looks nice, characters look wholly interesting, and overall this is definitely something that I would’ve watched, especially as a kid. It is probably the perfect thing for a child’s overactive and insatiable imagination. Space and history, rolled up together. The song itself is ridiculously catchy and the opening cinematic is so archetypal it’s cool. The thing that I fear is that this unassuming remake of a 1990 cartoon may not sit well with the MODERN AND UNFORGIVING STANDARDS of MUSHY AND HIS DEVILISH COHORTS. Seriously those guys don’t let up at all.

If Random Curiosity just recruited ten bloggers in the past ten weeks, METANORN must have recruited at least twenty in the last twenty… months. I don’t think it will be executed poorly in the slightest, but the maximum capacity for this show just isn’t that high.

I was a bit tempted to not put the quote above and instead just had the quote being ‘Shinichiro Watanabe: Director.’ That would be definitely indicative of fanboyism and would tarnish my yet-nonexistent reputation as a reviewer, but seriously that guy has done really cool stuff in the past. However, the setting of the high school contrasts with the settings of Watanabe’s more famous works like Bebop and Champloo, although I highly doubt that this will hinder him in the slightest.
To top it all off, the composer for Bebop, Yoko Kanno, will be the composer for this show as well. I loved Bebop‘s OST very very much, and I look forward to hearing the great music that will be present here.
To actually comment on the plot and setting, now. I happen to like shows where the central relationship is not sexual in the slightest. While it isn’t completely certain that this is that way, it certainly seems to be, and this provides room for more meaningful character and plot development. While this often happens when the central relationship is sexual, I feel that the presence of a sexual relationship often makes writing too easy, as there are figuratively billions of stories to get inspiration from. Enough about analysis though.

Point is this is going to be quite good if not excellent.

Some guy on twitter said this was ‘flat-chest mahjong’ but the trailer obviously proves that wrong. Look at those boobs. If you did, congratulations, you’re fucking perverse.

Jests aside, this looks like a rather good show at first glance. The only semi-major complaint that I might have right off the bat is the MC’s hair. It is literally a cat. There’s a potential for fanservice, but whether it will actually happen is uncertain. So whatever.

Honestly, what could be more boring than some weird comedy about some dog who happens to be a student? Also, it’s been done by America before, with Teacher’s Pet. Sure, you can say that it’s AMERICAN and therefore NOT GOOD like many of you probably think, but it’s actually probably funnier in all honesty. Shiba Inuko-san would just be a bunch of silly cliched jokes.

I first thought that the premise of this show sounds like the premise of a single movie rather than a TV series. The plot seems to be quite straightforward compared to the rest of what you normally see in the Japanese animation industry, and I originally felt that it didn’t warrant that many hours of content. However, now I think that the premise is completely okay for something with this much running time, as I actually feel that many movies should have had many more hours of content to fully explore the setting and characters of the story presented.
I think that this is a breath of fresh air just by the premise alone. Without any obvious romantic antics and focussing instead on the value of unconditional familial bonds between these opposite yet similar brothers is quite refreshing. If anything, this will definitely chock full of heartwarming.
I do not expect this show to excel from a science fiction standpoint. I do not see this as actually being about space. This is about a tale of two brothers who made a promise to each other to reach a seemingly unattainable dream. Once one of the brothers realized that dream, he encourages his brother to realize it as well.

I look forward to following this show.

I think that Zumomo to Nupepe is a Japanese anime, although its Japanese may be a bit too Japanese. Of course, Japanese doesn’t matter as much as Korean, which really is quite Korean. The Gakkatsu! of the anime may still be Korean but there’s no need to Japanese over such a Japan. The director, Japanese, is pretty Japanese, and he’s been involved with Japan. His style is primarily Japanese, which may be good for Zumomo to Nupepe’s Japanese, yet, the final Korean of Gakkatsu is still Japanese.
