Shiki starts off as ya’d expect from an anime whose name means “Corpse Demon”: with a corpse. But not a demon. >:|
OBVIOUSLY IT’S NOW TIME FOR TA FLASHBACK TO TA PAAAAAAAAAAAAAST
So there’s this village called SOTOBA
And the date is August 2nd
And this girl called Shimuzu MEGUMI, in Grade TEN
Who is TOTALLY not related ta certain pink-haired people in a certain zombie anime
is a stupid spoiled brat hates ta village because she’s a stupid spoiled brat tired of it, but she still likes two things in ta village because she’s a stupid spoiled brat: Yuuki NATSUNO, a random really really awesomely cool guy who is also in Grade TEN, who also hates ta village because he’s too AWESOMESAUCE FOR IT, and ta Kanemasa palace/castle/mansion/European-styled-house because she’s a stupid spoiled brat. RUN-ON SENTENCE YEAH
Anyways, in some other weird, isolated, random place in the village, two bodies are found: Murasako Mieko and Murasako Hidemasa. Next door, Ookawa Gigorou’s body is also found.
Ta resident priest of Sotoba, Muroi SEISHIN, and some random police officer, Takami, go ta investigate, after ta death of Gotouda Shuuji.
Ta hospital dean, Ozaki TOSHIO (who owns OZAKI clinic), notices that Mieko died after Hidemasa and Gigorou, meaning she spent several days with two dead bodies.
But she survives, so ta next day, Megumi is greeted by Tanaka KAORI (9th grade) and her brother, Tanaka AKIRA (7th grade). NOT THAT THAT HAS ANYTHING TA DO WITH ANYTHING
Yano KANAMI is like some girl who lives in a ROADSIDE RESTAURANT or something I don’t know OK this anime is confusing :V
Oh, she also has a really old mom, Yano TAE.
Anyways at like 2:05 or some random really really really really late/early time, AN EVIL MAN COMES
HE IS EVIL
TA EMBODIMENT OF EVIL
TA EMBODIMENT OF SCARLET EVIL
Actually he’s just a moving company guy and ta KIRISHIKI family will be moving inta KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANEMASA
It is now August 11th, and Megumi trudges up ta stairs to ta mansion (European-styled-house) in A COLD BLOODED FURY OF HATE TOWARDS TA VILLAGE
Then she disappears.
SO PEOPLE ARE MAD AND THIS GUY IS TA EMBODIMENT OF SCARLET MADNESS
He is Ookawa ATSUSHI (possibly related to Ookawa GIGOROU, who as ya know, died), and ta person punching him is his father, Ookawa TOMIO, owners of Ookawa LIQUOR STORE. They COMB ta MOUNTAINS (obviously with ta entire rest of ta village) ta find MEGUMI.
It is Friday, August ta 12th. Everyone’s looking for Megumi now, YUUKI (Natsuno’s dad, and if his surname was Yuuki he’d be Yuuki Yuuki), MUTOU (chief office manager of Ozaki Clinic, which ya know that TOSHIO owns), Shimizuo TAKEO (Megumi’s dad), etc. Eventually, ATSUSHI finds Megumi (still alive, no HotD or Portal references, sorry), and brings her back.
The 13th of August. Toshio tries ta save Megumi but she won’t eat after coming back, cause she has anemia from insect bites or something. Blah blah blah blah blah. Noone cares.
Ootsuka YASUYOKI is a lumber shop employee. KAORI walks by with ta AWESOMEST DOG EVER, Love, and GETS SHOCKED BECAUSE YASUYOKI IS TALKING TA PERSON WHO MOVED INTO KANEMASA, Kirishiki CHIZURU.
No, that was what Megumi was dreaming in her half-awake half-asleep state.
Monday, August 15th. Three days after Megumi came back from ta mountains.
Megumi is dead.
“Wait, so is ta first half season of Shiki over?”
…No. THAT WAS TA FREAKING FIRST EPISODE
SO NOW YA KNOW HOW AWESOME THIS SHOW IS.
Continue reading or stop here and read ta rest at a later time or something, AFTER WATCHING TA EPISODE BECAUSE IT’S AWESOME.
So TOSHIO wants an autopsy on MEGUMI, but TAKEO won’t allow that. :V
But now it’s confirmed that Megumi’s dead and WON’T EVER WALK AGAIN NO SIREE NOT AT ALL MMHMM BELIEVE ME SHE’S DEAD GONE FOREVER WON’T SEE HER EVER AGAIN YEAH
But ta main character is gone now?!
No, ta main character is actually NATSUNO.
So they go ta Megumi’s funeral, Toshio diagnoses her cause of death, blah blah blah blah blah.
August 21st, TAE (ta roadside restaurant old lady, just ta refresh ya memory) visits Gotouda FUKI (mother of Gotouda SHUUJI, who died, as ya know). BUT SHE’S DEAD
Yasumori GIICHI’s also DEAD.
Apparently a bunch of people are dying of summer colds because this summer is really really hot.
TOSHIO calls ISHIDA, Public Health Officer in ta Town Office, for a death-count of that month. In Sotoba, there are only about a thousand people, so there shouldn’t be that many deaths.
More people are introduced, including Tadokoro MITSUO (In no way related ta certain Yagokoro), Tsurumi, and Ikebe, all people working at SEISHIN’s temple.
Seishin and Toshio meet up for some reason, and they discuss ta amount of deaths and other stuff that ya need ta discuss.
Apparently only four people died in ta whole of last year’s summer, and this year, there’s been seven.
And for all of them, their cause of death…
On ta 24th, Ishida, Toshio, and Seishin meet up again. Apparently, a total of ten people died in ta past half-month – that’s already 1% of ta total population. If everyone were ta keep dying at this pace, in a year, a quarter of everyone in Sotoba would be dead.
August 1st, Ookawa Gigorou and Murasako Hidemasa.
August 5th, Murasako Mieko.
August 6th, Gotouda Shuuji.
August 11th, Hirosawa Takatoshi (random guy)
August 15th, Shimizu Megumi.
August 17th, Yasumori Giichi.
August 18th, Ootsuka Yasuyuki (the lumber shop employee guy)
August 21st, Gotouda Fuki.
August 23rd, Shimizu Ryuuji (unrelated ta Megumi, I think)
Takatoshi, Yasuyuki, and Ryuuji all died in another hospital in ta neighbouring town, Mizobe.
Toshio assesses that it may be a epidemic (worst case scenario), and reveals that Nao, from Yasumori Construction, visited him yesterday with a case similar ta Megumi’s.
As ya can see, ta infections are all linked together. Gigorou/Hidemasa/Mieko lived near each other, Fuki and Shuuji are related, and Giichi/Nao work in ta same company.
Ta three resolve ta do what they can ta stop this plague from spreading; Seishin ta question ta surviving families for symptoms, Ishida ta make a flyer or some other random useless crap, and Toshio ta find ta disease in question, and stop it for good.
Of course we can’t leave our main character, and apparently Natsuno’s been having nightmares that Megumi’s STILL ALIVE (still no references, whether that’s good or bad is up to ya to decide)
A guy drives up ta him one day, Mutou TOHRU (son of ta Chief Office Manager of ta Clinic, introduced earlier). He’s in 12th grade and can drive a car and random crap like that. He’s taking driving lessons from Kunihiro RITSUKO, a nurse at ta clinic. After Tohru helped Natsuno fix a bike tire or something like that, he became his best (and probably only) friend in ta village, as before, Natsuno wanted nothing ta do with ta village.
In regards ta Shiki, Seishin’s writing a novel with ta same name, not that that has anything ta do with anything.
At school, he meets Murasako MASAO (I think related ta those two people who died on ta 1st and 5th), in Grade 11. He HATES NATSUNO, A LOT.
Murasako MUNEHIDE is MASAO’s father, and Masao lives with him, his younger brother Murasako HIROMI (in 3rd Grade), and his sister-in-law, Murasako CHIZUKO.
Yasumori MIKIYASU, a childhood friend of Seishin and Toshio, visits Toshio with his wife, Nao (introduced before), who is now severely sick.
Mikiyasu reveals that this happened after ta Kirishikis’ came over.
Kirishiki CHIZURU is ta blonde and Kirishiki SEISHIROU is ta really scary looking person.
Their daughter, Kirishiki SUNAKO, goes ta Seishin and tells him that SHE’S LIEK HIS NUMBER ONE BIGGEST BIGGEST FAN DESU WA, and also reveals that SEISHIN TRIED TA COMMIT SUICIDE IN TA PAST but FAILED because his WRISTS’ SKIN WAS TOO STRONG FOR TA KNIFE
August 28th: Nao dies.
Masao runs over ta Tohru’s house ta announce ta rules, and almost PUNCHES NATSUNO TA DEAAAAAAAAAAAAAATH. But Natsuno doesn’t die so STUFF’S AMAAAAAAAAAAZING.
Tohru goes ta buy a drink but HIS MONEY FALLS UNDERNEATH TA VENDING MACHINE
But ta EMBODIMENT OF SCARLET NEVILLE, whose name is actually TATSUMI, ta STEWARD for ta KIRISHIKIS, gets ta coin.
So that in case a secondary character who is bound ta die in ta next episode or two can go outside after a quarrel with ta main character and another secondary character who must die pretty soon too and buy a drink but find that a 100-yen coin fell underneath ta vending machine and he can’t move ta vending machine and his arm’s not skinny/long enough ta reach it?
Akira reveals ta Kaori his suspicions – everyone died after they met one of ta Kirishikis, and ta deaths only started occuring after they moved into Kanemasa. Megumi went ta Kanemasa, Yasuyuki met Chizuru, Nao talked ta them too. Next death will then be Tohru, but nobody knows about that…
Seishin learns that Takami (ta policeman waaaaaaaaaay back in episode one) died, and his family suddenly moved away without saying g’bai or anything. They even left all their stuff behind.
Ritsuko realizes that another family also moved away when someone died, with ta same moving company.
His replacement has also been created.
He is STRONGER
and BETTER than the previous ones.
He has TA POWER ta CHANGE TA WORLD.
One week later, September 7th (OH CRAP SCHOOL STARTS):
Yasumori SUSUMU, son of Mikiyasu and Nao, dies, in front of Mikiyasu and his parents, Yasumori TOKUJIROU and Yasumori SETSUKO.
Mikiyasu has been infected, too.
Toshio analyzes ta data and finds that it’s ta same disease as ta one that’s killed all those other people.
Sunako talks ta Seishin again, and reveals that she’s
a vampire and can’t go out into daylight because of a WEIRD DISEASE known as vampirism.
It is now obvious that SEISHIN and SUNAKO are ta SECOND and THIRD MAIN CHARACTERS of this show.
Mikiyasu, as expected, dies as well, on ta 10th of September.
On ta 12th, Toshio gathers ta hospital staff and informs them that as of Mikiyasu’s death, nineteen people have died from August 1st onwards. He announces it as an epidemic. They talk about weird scientific-y medical stuff that I won’t even try ta understand.
It is now finally obvious that TOSHIO is ta FINAL MAIN CHARACTER.
His staff consists of ta clinic manager, introduced before, Mutou (father of Tohru);
Shimoyama, ta radiologist;
Nagata KIYOMI, a nurse;
Parrot’s mail knock-turn human goblin aria?
Isaki SATOKO, a nurse;
Shiomi YUKI, a nurse;
and Towada, a ‘clinic staff’.
Natsuno sleeps over at Tohru’s house, and in his dream, he imagines MEGUMI RISING UP FROM TA DEAD
AND BITING TOHRU.
Seishin goes ta interview ta various surviving families. They reveal that many of them quit their job right before they died, such as Oota KENJI, who quit his teaching job. He talks ta FUNERAL TEAM CARETAKER, Koike MASAHARU. It is revealed that Takashima YASUO quit his job as well.
Not only that, but an employee of OOKAWA’s liquor store (old angry Armstrong man), CAPTAIN MOTHERFUCKING MURAMATSU… Yasuzou reveals that his daughter, Yasuyo, died.
Seishin tries ta talk ta librarian, Yuzuki, but he SUDDENLY QUIT HIS JOB.
It is ta 16th.
Megumi was not a dream.
With ta one likable secondary character in ta entire show dead, I shall now commit suicide. At least his sister, Mutou AOI, and brother, Mutou TAMOTSU, remain…
After that, Hiromi starts ta become sick too.
OH GOD HOW I WISH THAT MASAO WOULD JUST DIE
Murasako MUNETAKA, his older brother, gets ANGRY at Masao, who hints that Hiromi may die. MUNEHIDE SLAPS Masao. MASAO IS SAD BUT NOBODY CARES ABOUT HIM TA STUPID LOSER
Masao goes ta Tohru’s funeral and argues with Natsuno. As he runs away, crying, YUZUKI JUMPS ON HIM.
Masao gets bitten.
THANK GOD FINALLY YES YES YES HE’S DEAD NOW LET’S JUST HOPE HE DOESN’T REVIVE AS A VAMPIRE
Unfortunately, Hiromi then dies.
Katou Yoshihide is suffering from a disease, and after his wife reveals that she tried ta save him with a HERBAL SOLUTION.
TOSHIO IS MADDENED BY THIS STUPID IDEA AND GETS AAAAAAAAAAAAANGRY
Natsuno places torn pieces of paper on ta ground as a trap for Megumi, and Megumi picks up some pieces. Now knowing that Megumi exists, he vows that he will not die that easily.
He then tries ta talk ta Seishin, but he’s not at ta shrine so he gets introduced ta Seishin’s father, Muroi NOBUAKI, and mother, Muroi MIWAKO.
MEANWHILE, Itou IKUMI is an old hag.
Meanwhile once again, Masao dies on September 20th.
Takano FUJINO is a PARTTIMER at Ozaki clinic, and quits her job.
Meanwhile for hopefully ta last time, Toshio talks to ETSUKO, a sick patient, and reveals that she is feeling much better after a complete blood transfusion. Toshio realizes that he may be becoming too much like his father, Toshio no Chichi. He bumps into Natsuno, who asks him whether or not he’s certain of Megumi’s death. Toshio laughs it off, quipping that vampires don’t exist – and suddenly stops, with a new revelation.
Meanwhile for ta really, really, final, last last time, Kaori and Akiri sneak into Kanemasa after finding a dead person go in. They do not notice Tatsumi watching from afar…
First of all, obvious stuff out first:
I HATE MEGUMI
TOHRU IS AWESOME
I HATE MASAO
NATSUNO IS AWESOME
Alright, I think that’s all I have ta say on this show.
…No, it’s not.
Shiki seems ta have gotten many good reviews from most people, as it’s done a masterful job on setting ta mood and tempo of ta story but a quarter in. Why was this post so long? Because everyone one of those aspects were important (if not crucial) to ta advancement of ta plot. There’s no stupid fillers. No meaningless episodes. No one scene that is useless. Even at ta very beginning, foreshadowing ta policeman’s death (even though that scene could’ve been removed, ta impact of Takami’s death would have been considerably less), showing ta various characters and giving Megumi a central scene in ta beginning episode, all served ta create what could, and should, become quite a masterpiece.
Ta mood is accurately painted as well; ta OP, though criticized by some for its poor taste in music (NOT CREEPY ENOUGH DESU WA) seemed ta me a very good indication of ta mood. Shiki is less of a horror show than it is of mystery; for all ya know, ta Kirishikis may not even be ta culprits! Dissonant melodies, vibraphonic sounds and that god-accursed voice represent three main things – respectively, the striking differences between each of ta characters in ta show (unlike some where everyone’s basically ta same), ta overall creepiness of Shiki, and finally, how annoying Masao/Megumi is.
As mentioned before, foreshadowing plays such a major role in this that I don’t even. Though after a while, showing just ta main points falls a bit short of target as now ya know that Ikumi’s gonna die (after all, why else would they give her a special scene like that)? Examples ta illustrate ideas (Fujino quitting her job, undoubtedly going ta die before episode 8), reoccurring characters that’d ya’d think would be minor (Yuzuki, who then kills Masao), and many other things make this ta hands-down best show of ta season, or at least within ta top 3.
As it is within ta top 3, I’ll be switching Ookami-san with this now. This beats Ookami-san in so many ways that I don’t even…
This is one of ta few shows where I can’t predict what’s going ta happen next – I can predict minor things such as deaths (because this show uses such heavy foreshadowing) but ta general idea is unknown now. Will they kill ta Kirishikis? Will they die? Will they even find out ta cause of deaths?
I don’t know, and neither do ya know, so I guess it’s time for all of us ta just watch ta next episodes.
